Vacation Injury Survival Essentials: Part 2
Having some essential over- the counter products on hand, in case of minor injuries, can help you be prepared. Yesterday we discussed how to handle headaches, muscle strain, and sore muscles. It is important to make sure all of your products are “in-code”. I’ve made this mistake myself, and did not have children’s Motrin on hand when my child got a high fever at night.
Today we will advance our list:
4. Basics for cuts and scrapes- Running minor cuts under cool water for several minutes can be sufficient for cleaning dirt and debris. Antibiotic creams and sprays are necessary for minor cuts, and may cause skin reactions. If bleeding doesn’t stop within a few minutes, or red streaks appear, go to your doctor or to urgent care.
5. Stomach upset- Try an antacid, a gas reliever, or constipation medication.
6. Poisoning- *Call poison control for help. Don’t give charcoal or syrup of Ipecac unless instructed by a professional counselor or doctor. It may make it worse.
7. Eye injuries- Saline, Clear Eye or eye drops are effective in flushing small objects from your eye. Like other OTC products, they have expiration codes and should be checked periodically. If a chemical is accidentally in the eye, especially with children, call your doctor or 911 immediately.
8. Twists or strains- Ace bandages or great to have on hand. Even an inexpensive arm- sling or crutches may come in handy sometime.
9. Antiseptic mouthwash and Ambesol- They are effective no matter the age, for minor scrapes, and canker sores. I used Ambesol in my son’s mouth while on vacation for a re-occurring bite spot on the inside of his mouth. It was very effective. You should be careful to precise where you put Ambisol, because it numbs whatever it touches. Be careful not to eat if you used numbing gel so that you don’t aggravate the injury.
All of the products can be bought at any pharmacy or grocery store and are good to have on hand.
