07/13/15- Paula's Healthy Living Eating/Exercise Journal: Friday

On a hot day (It’s 107 here at the moment); nothing tastes as good as a cool treat.  But many ice cream treats can sabotage your weight loss and fitness goals. Nestle’ drumsticks have 360 calories.  Starbuck’s Double Chocolaty Chip Frappuccino (grand) has 500 calories.    Not having any is not the solution for a variety of reasons.  If you say no to treats all the time, then you are more likely to binge on really bad treats when you are feeling stressed.  There are healthy-living treats that fulfill all your needs.

-FroYo is soft serve frozen yogurt.  There is a wide range of healthiness in this genre. Ask the vendor, or investigate in advance who sells the most reasonably caloric variety.  A few that I found are;  Menchies at 90 calories, 0g fat, Red Mango calories, 0g fat, Yogurt Mountain at 90 calories, 0g fat, and Pinkberry at 100 calories, and 0g fat.   3 to 3.5 oz. is a good portion.  When you add toppings, add them in moderation and choose whole fruits, sliced nuts, or a few dark chocolate nubs.

It’s also calorie reasonable, and cost-effective to make your own frozen treats at home.  You can find molds at Target, Wal-Mart, William-Sonoma or on-line for about $15. The possibilities here are endless!

Take a handful of cleaned berries, add a mint leaf, a touch of low-sugar orange juice (or fresh squeezed) and blend to smooth.  Put it in mold about 1/3 up and freeze.  Add a thinned out 0% Greek yogurt with a touch of honey, or a low-calorie vanilla variety and put in mold.  Vary levels of these to your liking.

Try adding odd concoctions of different fruits, herbs like thyme or basil, green tea or whatever you can think of.  Send your recipe in at the bottom of this blog and share it with all of the other readers in the 520 YourCity.MD sites.
