If you have ever had concern about product safety concerning generic drugs, don’t, according to Lisa Gill, editor of the Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs program.  The Food and Drug Administration regulates generic drugs just as it does name-brand drugs.  All generics, by law, must have exactly the same active chemical as the brand-name drugs they copy and must work in the same way.

The generic varieties can vary in their shape and color but not their effectiveness.  They are up to 80% cheaper and many are more readily covered by health insurance drug programs.

You need to speak to your doctor and also your trusted pharmacist about what’s available.  I did find that my daughter did not tolerate a generic variety of her medication, and I decided that for us, the side effects weren’t worth the financial savings.  I did make a switch to a generic brand on one of my medications and saved $40 per prescription with no side effect.  You just need to see what works best for you.
