Medical identity theft is a prevalent, costly vandalism of a patient’s medical information, insurance ID number, or records.  This is costly in multiple ways.  The thief can steal your identity for the purpose of transferring your ID into cash, using your ID to bilk insurance companies, or to forge prescriptions or medical procedures.

The costs can be measured in cash to all those who were stolen from but also stolen is the piece-of- mind of the patient that their records will remain private and confidential. 

Hospitals and clinics are the most targeted medical places where the thieves target.  This is because at larger institutions, the thieves can target more people in a small period of time. 

The Federal Trade Commission and The Worldwide Privacy Forum recommend the following guidelines to protect you (www.ftc.gov/idtheft.):

1.       Don’t give medical information on the phone, over the internet or by mail unless you initiate the request.

2.       Don’t discard personal or medical information without shredding it first.

3.       Closely monitor “Explanation of Benefits” statements from insurers.  Question any services you don’t recognize even if you don’t owe money pertaining to that service.

4.       Request copies of medical records from physicians and hospitals and request a list of bills paid by insurers.  If you see anything on these bills that doesn’t seem correct.

5.       Regularly check your credit history.  If something appears that you don’t recognize, challenge it immediately.  Many major credit cards offer this protection at a small fee.

6.       Request and follow through with providers and insurers to correct any errors that were made.  Don’t let anyone put you off if you feel an error was made.  Employees often just see their job as a ‘job’.  This is your life!

If you ask anyone that has been a victim of identity medical theft about their saga and consequences, they would stress how important self-protection is.  Put these guidelines into place whenever you have medical procedures.

protein shake with 1/2 cup pasturized egg whites (190 cal)

A.M. Snack-

1 cup cooked quinoa, mixed with frozen peas, 1 /4 tls curry (183 cal)

1 apple (57 cal)

Lunch-

3.5 oz salmon (180 cal)

8 oz greens- spinach, 1/2 sweet pepper,1/4 cup yellow squash, + 2 tbls garbanzo beans, 1 tbls roasted sunflower seeds (150 cal)

3 oz quinoa (130 cal)

P.M. Snack-

apple (57 cal)

Dinner-

2 soft shell crabs,, lemon ( no butter) (360 cal)

1/2 acorn squash, spritz with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, nutmeg (65 cal)

1 cup wilted spinach, garlic, EVOO (85 cal)

Dessert-

large handful of dark chocolate acai berries(120 cal)


TOTAL CALORIES-1920
