How can you make Halloween a fun holiday for you and your children but not go into a sugar coma resulting in a weight gain?  A nutritionist from NutritionData.com had some helpful tips:

1.  Don't let kids snack on their candy while trick-or-treating.  They may be more likely to want to go home earlier with less of a load so they can eat some of their candy.

2.  Avoid other sugar drinks and foods while the candy stash is still being eaten.  For example, I was at church this morning and a toddler had his little bag of fruit loops to snack on.  Why not Cheerios?  If your child is going to be eating candy later in the day choose healthier options throughout the rest of the day.

3.  Keep the candy to a minimum (maybe a piece AFTER their meal has been eaten)

4.  Try to push candy that has peanuts in it.  It's typically less calories and more protein.  Better options with less sugar include:

Less than 20 grams of sugar (taken from NJ.com)

- Sugarless gum 
- 3 Muskateers Mint
- Twix peanut butter bars 
- Hershey's Reeses Sticks 
- Nutrageous 
- Chocolate covered peanuts 
- Hershey's Chocolate Almond Bites 
- Mr. Goodbar 
- Reeses Pieces 
- Kit Kat 
- Almond Joy 
- Mounds

Breakfast -

JC Cheesy Omelet

1 cup coffee with fat-free creamer

Banana

Snack -

JC Anytime Bar

Lunch -

JC Cheesy Potatoes and Chicken

Carrots

Snack -

3/4 cup strawberries

Dinner -

JC Chicken Fettucine

Brussel Sprouts plain

1 glass of red wine

Snack -

JC Triple Chocolate Cheesecake
