8. Teeth Grinding:

"People who have otherwise healthy teeth and gums can clench so often and so hard that over time, they wear away their tooth's enamel, causing chipping and sensitivity," says Halpern.

Teeth grinding also called bruxism can affect you jaw, cause pain in both the jaws and jaw joint, and even change the appearance of your face. Many people are unaware of this habit, but the appearance of wear facets on posterior teeth, notching of teeth at the gumline (called abfractions), as well as the worn look of front teeth are telltale signs of bruxism.

Stress, anger, and even sleep apnea can increase nighttime teeth grinding. Perle advises that "Finding ways to alleviate these feelings can help, but it's also important to see your dentist who can recommend solutions like a custom night guard."

9. Candy:

I know that this comes as a big surprise, but did you know that sugar won't directly damage your teeth, but the acid when you eat sugar or carbohydrates can.

Halpern states "The worst thing you can do is leave sugar lingering on your teeth and gums. Eating any amount of candy and brushing and flossing immediately is actually less damaging than not brushing after eating one piece before bedtime."

He also says that "Naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth devour sugar, creating acids that attack tooth enamel, which can lead to decay and a host of other problems, including gingivitis and cavities."

If you are not able to brush after a sweet binge, rinse your mouth out with water or chew sugarless gum to increase saliva flow and neutralize the acids.
