7/7/15 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Thursday

by Katie (Jenny Craig 2009 Poster Girl) 7. July 2014 19:35

My mom and I were just on the phone this morning and somehow we got into a discussion about how many people in the world are overeaters.  It's really just as serious of a problem as anorexia or bulemia.  We were both saying how part of being overweight is genetics but another ties into emotional eating.  As just a little kid I was constantly tugging on my Mom's shirt asking what was for dinner and could I have a snack.  She routinely heard me announce, "I'm hungry."  This was even stated after I had just eaten a large meal.  She did an incredible job trying to model good eating habits.  Her response was always, "Would you like me to slice you up an apple?"  Sometimes she added a little peanut butter or low-fat cheese slices if I were lucky.  Once I started overeating though, it almost seemed as if the part of my brain that told me I was full was non-existent.  I bet it took a year or longer doing the Jenny Craig diet for the part of my brain that now says I'm full to return.  I had to completely reteach my brain what an actual serving size was.  At the beginning it was awful.  I was cranky and had horrible headaches.  Two weeks into the program and I at least was rid of the side effects of "withdrawl."  I thought this site was interesting for more information on the subject:http://overcomingovereating.com/  I would imagine there are many people that you and I know that fall into this category.  The point is, try not to judge, you don't know the cause behind the problem, it's just as much a disorder as anything else.  Try to be positive and do the best job you can modeling healthy choices and promoting exercise.  The rest, unfortunately, is up to the person battling their issues with food.
