Of all the advancements that dentistry has seen in the last decade, I would have to rate Invisalign in the top five most significant.  This product has revolutionized the field of orthodontics and created a significant demand for treatment in adults.

The history of Invisalign:  The company was founded in 1997 by a group of orthodontists.  They received FDA clearance for their process in 1998 and first started to market Invisalign to orthodontists in 1999.  The product was then introduced to general dentists and then subsequently became a part of dental school curriculums in 2003.  Today Invisalign is prescribed in 50 countries and has been used to treat 1.4 million patients.

So what is this orthodontic technique that has rapidly become such a success?  The process utilizes computer technology in creating a series of bpa free plastic removable aligners that are extremely effective in moving teeth.  The typical records are taken by your dentist (photos, impressions, panoramic radiograph) and then are sent to Invisalign.  These records are then scanned and used to create digital 3D images that are used virtually to map out the movements needed to orthodontically correct the patient’s bite.
