3/15/15 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Tuesday

by Katie (Jenny Craig 2009 Poster Girl) 15. March 2014 19:35

Our son just turned 22 weeks old today.  He is now at the 5 month mark.  Doctors usually recommend starting babies on solids between 4-6 months.  Our doctor, as I've mentioned in the past, had us start on rice cereal about a week before his 4 month check-up.  His belly really had a tough time with the rice cereal the first few weeks.  After 2 weeks the doctor wanted us to add in stage 1 baby food.  We started with the veggies first: carrots, peas, and sweet potatoes.  He's now onto the fruits: pears, bananas, etc.  Our doctor (and many other mom's who I've talked to) didn't give us any kind of "guide" for how to start him on solid food.  It's kind of frustrating for a first time mom (and I'm anal retentive) to not have any kind of instructions.  What I've gathered from various internet sites is that the more I vary his foods the more likely he'll be to try new things in the future.  Our plan is to get through the stage 1 veggies doing one new food per four days.  We do rice cereal in the morning and bottles in between.  After I've had him try all the stage 1 foods I'm going to mix them (maybe a sweet potato and peas) for dinner and add another solid stage 1 to breakfast and lunch.  I'll probably do a week of this and see how his stomach does before I start on stage 2 foods.  Many of my friends said they didn't start their babies on "real" food until around 9 months or older (once there were a few teeth in to chew up the food properly).
