02/13/15- Paula's Eating/Exercise Journal: Thursday

They started a new policy at my son and step-daughters primary school of no food allowed during Valentines, or birthday celebrations of class parties.  It is an effort by the district to encourage healthy eating and cut back on sugar candy and cakes at the school.  I was very surprised by the reactions from parents.  They are angry and voicing their opinions loudly!

I applaud the district for trying to reduce the amount of candy given at school.  I personally never understood why teachers gave out candy as a reward for good behavior or the like.  I feel that giving sugary treats is the parent’s responsibility and it is the school’s opportunity to show children that candy and sugar is not a ‘treat’ but that a cozy day where you can wear pj’s all day or a pizza party is a better reward.

I must admit it would stink if you couldn’t take cupcakes in for your birthday (my son has his birthday before they started this policy), but with any situation, this new policy is an opportunity to be creative and take a great craft in to celebrate.

I will support my school districts efforts to really teach children healthy eating.  Next, I hope the district addresses their hot lunch program and makes more healthy choices their next!
