What is the best mattress?  This is a very tough question.  It is a lot like asking which is the best car to buy.  A mattress is a very personal choice and there is not a single right answer.  What makes it more difficult is that there is often someone sleeping on the mattress with you.  Now you have to take into account what they want as well.

Let’s start with what type of mattresses there are out there.  First you have your basic old fashion spring mattress.  These have come a long way and have many, many, many different types and toppers and cushions and springs.  Second you have the air filled adjustable mattress.  Third is the memory foam mattress. Finally is the waterbed.

The spring mattress is the cheapest way to go, and has the most options.  Some of these mattresses have to be flipped over on a regular basis.  There is a very broad range of companies, prices and types of cushion of these mattresses.  The most difficult part of picking one out is  that it can take up to two weeks to get used to the mattress.  So, you may spend a lot of money and after a month find that it is not comfortable.  Make sure you look at the return policy before you buy.

The mattress research shows that the form fitting mattresses actually help you sleep with less tossing and turning.  These are the air filled and memory foam mattresses.  Most of these do come with a 30 day money back trial period.  The increased technology also comes with a higher price tag.  In my opinion it is worth the price.

Plan on having your mattress for at least 10 years.  Take your time to visit several mattress stores.  If you are trying to fix your back pain, don’t expect to have your mattress solve all of your back problems.  First, talk to your chiropractor about why you are in pain and get a recommendation to what will work best for you.
