Continued from 11/2/10.  Not only was it overwhelming to learn that our son had pneumonia, I was also overwhelmed just learning the new day to day stuff about being a mom.  For example, this whole breast feeding concept.  Remember I wasn't sure if I could or not because of my breast reduction?  Well, immediately the nurses were pushing for me to try.  I actually had no objections because I was hoping the colostrum (a form of milk that is produced prior to the mother's milk actually coming in), which has been phrased as liquid gold, would help our son with the pneumonia.  It has antibodies in it that help fight diseases, help prevent/fight jaundice, and trigger the baby to have his first bowel movement.  Now this can actually be frustrating because you pump or breast feed for 20-40 minutes and may only produce 15 ml, give or take.  I immediately went to pumping because breast feeding would cause too much stress on our baby who was struggling so much to breathe.  This was frustrating because sometimes once a baby takes a bottle, he is no dummy, a bottle is much easier to get the food from than the breast.  He has to work much less to get food from a bottle.  I was producing a "normal" amount of colostrum so every 3 hours like clock work I was pumping for the babes.  This can become a HUGE hassle because it takes longer to produce enough from pumping, it makes it difficult when you're in public or visitors are around, and the breasts are like mammoth mountains that are extremely sensitive to the touch.  There's also the argument that a hospital grade pump MUST be used at the beginning until your milk comes in because a store bought pump does not have enough power to get your breasts to begin producing more in large quantities.  I was actually happy that every time lactation came to talk to me they couldn't find me because I was up in the Special Care Nursery.  I just hadn't made my decision for sure about if I was going to breast feed, pump, both, or do formula yet.  I had heard so many rumors about how pushy the lactation nursers were and I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with that.  To be continued...

1 cup fat-free organic milk

Lunch - 

Carrots

Fat-free yogurt

Sugar-free jello

Lean Cuisine Broccoli and Cheddar Pocket (6 g fat, 240 cal)

Snack - 

Orange

Dinner - 

Kung Pao Chicken (7g fat, 230 cal): 1 cup whole grain rice, vegetables, chicken in spicy low-sodium sauce.  Purchased at Costco.  May include peanuts but we opted to leave them out as they are a fat and I wanted my fat for my salad.

Salad (mixed greens, fat-free feta) 2 tbsp. balsamic 

Snack - 

100 cal pack
