A friend of mine came home from a summer in Maine with a story of a bacterial infection that I had not heard of.

It’s called MRSA.  A bacterial infection that’s highly resistant to some antibiotics.  It is a big problem in hospitals, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk.

Ask your doctor for a MRSA test at least a week before any hospital procedure (a nasal swab can tell if you a carrier for the strain of staph bacteria that causes MERSA.  This becomes an issue if you are a carrier because your immune system can be compromised by hospital procedure.  You can be given preoperative antibiotics.  http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/mrsa.html or This Article. The pictures my friend showed me of her son’s symptoms looked like an enlarged redish pimple on his thigh.  I would have thought it was a bad mosquito bite.  She had her son tested and found out it was MRSA ( after a doctor told her not to worry, it was nothing but she didn’t feel it was right!).   They went into lock-down mode at their home, due to the contagious nature of the strain.

She described her weeks-long process of de-contamination of her home on a daily basis (sheets, towels, surfaces).  She had very little contact with the outside world (which can be very depressing).  It was scary and stressful, but her family eventually pulled through.

1/2 tsp uda or flax oil ( 65 cal)

no calorie or reduced sugar diabetic salad dressing

6 p.m.- 3 oz turkey breast (149 cal)

3 oz potatoes ( boiled in skin) (64 oz)

8 oz green vegetables ( raw or steamed ) (88 cal)

8 p.m.-3 oz. Halibut (broiled) (145 cal)

3 oz beans, Lima (frozen) (104 cal)

8 oz greens (assorted) ( 88 cal)

1/2 tsp Uda's or flax oil ( 65 cal)

TOTAL CALORIES: 1551
