Fighting Cardiovascular Disease for Women: Part 1:            

With Valentine’s Day approaching, it brings to mind the critically important connection for women between exercise, clean eating, and cardiovascular disease. Blood pressure, BMI, and good/bad cholesterol numbers are important, but according to Noel Bailey Merz, M.D., director of the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., “the combined effects of pessimism, stress, depression, and loneliness have been shown to raise heart disease risk as much as high blood pressure or diabetes.”

            Dr.Merz stresses how important a supportive social network protects you from heart disease. Staying connected to others, finding productive outlets like exercise for stress, and trying to keep a sunny outlook on life is crucial. Depression may increase heart disease risk by as much as 64%. Depression can cause you to withdraw from others, and to negatively affect your eating, alcohol consumption and whether you exercise at all- all the worst things that you can do.

            In Part 2 of this topic, we’ll talk about important questions you should ask your doctor that you may not know.

Gold Brick Ice Cream Sundae (190 cal)

Grapefruit (40 cal)
