In case you haven't read in previous blogs I am an Intervention Specialist.  This is the new age term for "special educator."  Part of my job is to create behavior plans for students that are emotionally disturbed or aggression.  Recently one of my students who is in my resource room has been extremely disrespectful and violent towards other teachers and students.  It is my responsibility to create a plan because the behaviors have been occurring so often lately.  

In the classroom I am constantly contradicting myself.  I want to reduce the amount of sugar and junk food my students are eating; yet I seriously hand out candy in my classroom like it's water.  I think that I'm a fairly good teacher but it seems with each passing year more and more students are only motivated through extrinsic means.  As I created this student's behavior plan part of this entails developing several rewards for the student to choose when he reaches his goal.  I racked my brain for ways to motivate this student other than FOOD.  I know he would work for a king size candy bar, pop, or fast food in a heartbeat, however, I really would like to get away from that.  So, I put on his list of possible rewards, choosing a friend to go to each teacher's classroom and taking their recycling bins outside.  He LOVED this idea and is excited for the first time he gets to do such an "important job."  I was pretty excited because I actually came up with a reward that didn't involve sugar coursing through his veins!

3/4 cup multigrain hoops

1 low-fat string cheese

Banana

1 cup fat-free yogurt

Lunch - 

Cedarlane Bean and Cheese Burrito

Carrots with salsa

fat-free yogurt

sugar-free jello

Snack - 

2 clementines

Dinner - 

2 oz. chicken fajita's in a spinach wrap with onions, peppers, mushrooms

Broccoli with 1 tbsp. light ranch
