11/08/12- Paula's Eating/Exercise Journal: Sunday

This week my 5 year old came down with a fever.  By the afternoon, his fever was 104.7F.  He was crying a bit, but was mainly quiet and sleepy and not hungry ( but thirsty).  I was thinking- swine flu or flu, or what?  He had the flu mist vaccine in August when my mother was critically ill, so I didn't think it was seasonal flu.  I spoke to the Dr. on call at my pediatrician and here are some of the guidelines for figuring out which kind he had, that he told me. 
Seasonal flu often has fever between 101 F-102 F with chest discomfort, aches and exhaustion.  You can use over-the-counter pain pills for relief and drink lots of fluids.
A common cold shows symptoms of runny nose, cough, low-grade fever (below 100 F).  Keep drinking fluids.  Try using a humidifier over the counter cold medicine to try to relieve symptoms.  There are new guidelines in the last several years about cold medicines and younger children, so ask your pediatrician.  The humidifier can also help relieve symptoms in adults.
Swine flu or H1N1 feels like a seasonal flu, but often is marked by stomach issues also.  Dehydration can happen quicker because of the gastrointestinal symptoms.  Drink fluids and call your doctor if your in the high risk category, or if your sick for longer than a week.
Rest, stay home from work or school, stay hydrated and try some chicken soup!

1  cup organic egg whites, 1oz non-fat feta (120 cal)

1 Low-fat whole wheat English muffin, 1 tbls no sugar added boysenberry jam( 120)

A.M. Snack-

1 apple(70 cal)

12 Organic, no salt roasted almonds(100 cal)

Lunch- 

2 1/4 oz. flank steak (105 cal)

Salad- 2 cups spinach, 1/2 yellow sweet pepper, 1/2 cup green beans, steamed, 4 asparagus spears (60 cal.)

2 tbls- Balsamic vinegar, Extra virgin olive oil (90 cal) 

P.M. Snack-

10 oz. non-fat frozen yogurt ( 155 cal)

1/2 cup brown rice (180 cal)

Dinner- 

3 3/8 oz Pork loin (189 cal) 

1/3 cup steamed broccoli (10 cal)

1/2 carrot, steamed (20 cal)

1 apple- (67 cal)

Dessert-

1 apple (75 cal) Different calorie count on these depends on size

1 serving of non fat carmel dip (128 cal)

TOTAL CALORIES-1399
