She Said: Time for Yourself

by leslie 23. April 2012 08:34

It’s ok to take time for yourself.  Really.

Apparently this thought has been banished from the collective psyche of those of us in the midst of mid-life.* Is it not our job to  care of everything - and everyone – revolving around us?

Well yes and no.  Of course moms know just what this means.  Every responsibility from child to house to pet is theirs.  I stand in undiluted awe of the moms of the world. They’re the cornerstone of the family.  But what if the cornerstone needs a big of support itself?  Or herself?

We need to care for ourselves everyday.  Not when we can only fine the time. We have to make the time.  And I’m not talking about a spa weekend in the desert or the mountains or where ever else you’d like to go.  Taking just a few minutes for yourself everyday can rejuvenate your energy, revive an interesting in a hobby, or just boost your self-esteem.  And I don’t care if you’re a 6 foot tall former super model, every women needs to have a good kick in the moral regularly.

Consider these options to begins taking time for yourself:

Take a walk – my personal favorite.  Fresh air is the tonic for every woman who spends most of the day indoors or who’s still dealing with the last gasps of winter.  Grab your shoes and just walk out the door.  Don’t return for 30 minutes.  Repeat this process three times per week. Here’s the catch: you have to hoof it. This is not a stroll in the park. It’s your chance to breath deeply, move your muscles and feel good.  Not to mention you’ll burn off the cookie/pastry/bagel you ate earlier.

Give yourself a facial at home. None of us has to kiss $100 bye bye at a salon to enhance your complexion. Just lying down with a warm towel on your face for 15 minutes can do wonders. Reluctant to stop by a department store cosmetics counter? I understand. Find a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen appropriate for your skin type on the web. Most of the cosmetics companies offer on-line self-analysis programs to help you find what you need. Just follow the directions and keep it.  Who doesn’t want to have a healthy glow?

Get enough sleep. This may be the toughest suggestion to implement.  And I’ll admit, I’m the biggest offender.**   But the truth is no pill, no therapy, no spa treatment can replicate the astounding mechanics of our bodies at rest. So juggle the schedule to find a pillow … and stay there for eight hours.

Now, pick one and begin.

Because in the end, the only one who will care for us … is us.

Now go start your facial.

* Notice how I haven’t used the dreaded term ‘middle-aged”

** I reserve the right to get only 7 hours on Wednesdays because I HAVE to watch Law & Order and it airs at 10 eastern.  You can pick one night to snooze for only 7 as well.
